Lai Chau has 265,165 km of border roads (according to the Agreement on the Management Regime of the Vietnam-China Land Border), including the international border gate of Ma Lu Thang – Kim Thuy Ha and numerous trails along the Vietnam-China border, directly connecting with vast landmasses in the southwest of China. Lai Chau has the potential for the development of services, commerce, import-export, and tourism. Additionally, its strategic location is crucial for national defense, security, and safeguarding national border sovereignty. Lai Chau is located in the headwaters and a particularly vulnerable defense area of the Da River, Nam Na River, and Nam Mu River, directly regulating water sources for major hydropower projects on the Da River, ensuring sustainable development for the entire Red River Delta region.
The terrain is characterized by mountain ranges running from northwest to southeast, featuring high peaks such as Pu Ta Leng at 3,096 meters (the second-highest peak in Vietnam), and Bach Moc Luong Tu at 3,046 meters. The region has high hills and slopes, interspersed with deep and narrow valleys, numerous plateaus, rivers, and streams. The rivers have many rapids, and their high flow rates contribute to significant hydropower potential. Lai Chau has a distinctive landscape with numerous mountain ranges and plateaus, with the Hoang Lien Son mountain range to the east. Between these vast mountain ranges lies a relatively large area of low mountains and the Da River basin with many limestone plateaus (400 km long, 1-25 km wide, 600-1,000 meters high). Over 60% of the area is at an elevation above 1,000 meters, with over 90% having slopes greater than 25°, sharply cut by mountain ranges running from northwest to southeast, interspersed with relatively flat valleys such as Muong So, Tam Duong, Binh Lu, Than Uyen. There are high peaks like Fansipan at 3,143 meters, Pu Sam Cap at 1,700 meters, and others. The region has high hills and slopes, interspersed with many deep and narrow valleys, numerous rivers and streams, many waterfalls, and large flow rates, resulting in significant hydropower potential.
Lai Chau province has a tropical monsoon climate. The average annual temperature is around 21°C-23°C, divided into two seasons based on humidity: the rainy season and the dry season. The four distinct seasons are spring, summer, autumn, and winter, each characterized by different temperature ranges.
