Can Tho City is a centrally-governed city of Vietnam, considered as the economic, cultural, social, healthcare, educational, and commercial center of the Mekong Delta region. In 2019, Can Tho ranked 12th in terms of Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) and was the 24th most populous administrative unit in Vietnam. The city is famous for Ninh Kieu Pier, Cai Rang Floating Market, and being a riverine urban area. According to the plan until 2025, Can Tho will become the center for industry, commerce, services, education, training, science, technology, healthcare, and culture of the Mekong Delta region and a crucial transportation hub.

Geography of Can Tho City:

Can Tho City is a city located in the downstream of the Mekong River, at the center of the Mekong Delta, and is the fourth largest centrally-governed city in Vietnam. It is 1,877 km from Hanoi, 169 km from Ho Chi Minh City, more than 150 km from Ca Mau City, nearly 120 km from Rach Gia City, 264 km from Phnom Penh (Cambodia), and 75 km from the East Sea. Its natural area is 1,439.2 km², with a population of approximately 1,235,171 people and a population density of 885 people/km². Can Tho shares borders with the provinces of An Giang, Dong Thap, Vinh Long, Kien Giang, and Hau Giang. Can Tho has experienced rapid urbanization, with the urban population increasing by 9.8% in the past 10 years, while the rural population has decreased by 7.5%. The urbanization rate as of 2022 is 71.5%.

Can Tho City‘s Economy:

During the 2010-2015 term, the Can Tho city party committee exceeded 20 out of 22 targets set by the 12th party congress resolution, with an average economic growth rate of 12.19%. The economic structure shifted from agriculture and aquaculture to industry, construction, and trade and services. The total local gross domestic product (GDP) reached over 77,900 billion dong in 2015, a 1.8-fold increase compared to 2010, and the average income per capita was 78.46 million dong/year, a 2.15-fold increase compared to 2010.

Can Tho city contributes about 12% to the total annual budget revenue. Additionally, the total export turnover reached 1.375 billion USD with export relations to more than 100 countries and territories. The value of industrial production increased by 1.5 times compared to 2011 and reached 101,868 billion dong in 2015. In the first 9 months of 2012, Can Tho city’s economic growth rate reached 10.3%, the highest among the five centrally governed cities.

The industrial sector

In 2020, Can Tho City had a total of 250 projects, including 222 domestic and 27 foreign investment projects, and one ODA project, with a registered investment capital of $1.76 billion. The city’s industrial sector has developed infrastructure to serve foreign partners, including five industrial parks located in different districts. Can Tho aims to become an industrial city by 2020, according to Resolution 45-NQ/TW. The Can Tho Software Park is one of the projects that the city is investing in for development. The total revenue of enterprises operating in industrial parks reached over $1.866 billion, while two new investment projects with a registered capital of $4.66 million were attracted to the industrial parks.

Services & Commerce

Cần Thơ is a city in Vietnam with many large shopping centers such as Vincom Xuân Khánh, Vincom Hùng Vương, Go, Metro, Sense City (Co.opmart), Lotte Mart, VinMart (WinMart), Best Caring, Siêu thị Điện máy Sài Gòn Chợ Lớn, Siêu thị điện máy Nguyễn Kim, Khu mua sắm Đệ Nhất Phan Khang, Khu Thương mại Tây Đô, and Trung tâm thương mại Cái Khế. The city also has famous brand stores like Grab, Vinmart, Loteria, Jollibee, Highlands Coffee, The Coffee House, and Phúc Long. The service industry in Cần Thơ includes banking, healthcare, education, and culture. In 2020, some industries showed significant growth, such as frozen meat (8.6%), cement (33.83%), nails (43.57%), electricity (3%), and commercial water (4.33%).

Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the city’s retail sales reached over 139,077 billion VND, an increase of 3.53% compared to the same period the previous year. The city’s export activity decreased by 13.16% compared to the same period, with total export turnover for the year reaching over 1.93 billion USD. However, businesses made efforts to maintain their markets, find opportunities, and preserve jobs for workers. Cần Thơ’s service industry has been rapidly developing with diverse types of services due to its favorable location in the center of the Mekong Delta region. In the period from 2011 to 2015, the total retail sales and service revenue of the city reached 316,300 billion VND, with an average growth rate of 15.4%.

Finance – Banking

Cần Thơ is currently the leading financial center in the Mekong Delta region, with 46 credit institutions and 7 people’s credit funds operating in the city. These include various types of banks such as state-owned commercial banks, joint-stock commercial banks, foreign banks, and financial leasing companies. The total number of managing branches is 60, with 257 transaction points (excluding policy banks). This network has provided favorable conditions for people in remote areas to access banking and credit services. Despite the impact of COVID-19, the credit growth in Cần Thơ has still increased, with outstanding loans reaching over 92.627 trillion VND and mobilized capital exceeding 82 trillion VND by the end of April 2020. As a result, Cần Thơ has one of the largest outstanding loan balances in the Mekong Delta region.

Society of Can Tho City:

Can Tho has many radio and television stations, cable TV systems, and media agencies. Can Tho Stadium is the largest stadium in Vietnam with a capacity of 50,000 people and hosts motorcycle races. In addition, there are many other sports facilities such as the Multipurpose Arena, the Sand Court Tennis Area, the Swimming Arena, and the Military Zone 9 Football Field. Can Tho Football Club is currently playing in the National First Division.

Education:

As of September 30, 2008, Can Tho City had 255 schools at all levels of basic education, ranking first in the Mekong Delta region. The city has many leading universities and colleges in the Mekong Delta region.

Can Tho City currently has 9 universities, 16 colleges, 1 academy, 2 branches, and 12 vocational schools with a total of over 76,677 regular university, college, and vocational students, accounting for nearly 50% of the total number of students in the region. The City has 4,260 people with postgraduate degrees, including 234 people with doctoral degrees. Can Tho University and Can Tho University of Medicine and Pharmacy are two schools with high-quality training, maintaining their leading reputation in the region and the country.

In the 2019-2020 school year, the rate of students passing the entrance exams for grade 1 was 100%, grade 6 was 99.16%, and the rate of students accepted into public high schools was 90.73%. The network of grassroots health care has gradually improved its quality, with all 82 medical stations meeting the National Health Criteria for Communes, and the doctor-population ratio is 14.96 doctors per 10,000 people. Cultural and sports investment is also a priority.

Healthcare:

In 2008, Can Tho city had 83 medical facilities under the Department of Health, including 12 hospitals, 8 regional clinics, and 60 communal health stations with a total of 1,600 beds. By 2009, about 58 out of 76 communal health stations met national standards, and nearly all stations had doctors, nurses, or midwives. As of 2020, there are 34 hospitals in the city, including 28 general and specialized hospitals, and 7 hospital systems in districts and provinces.

The city has 13 different religions with a total of 601,330 followers, of which Hoa Hao Buddhism and Buddhism are the largest religions with 245,390 and 193,636 followers, respectively. The rest are Catholicism, Caodaism, Protestantism, Four Debts of Gratitude and other religions. (data as of April 1, 2019)
